My research focuses on the intersection between images and knowledge, because I believe that what we see, and how we see what we see, has a strong impact on how we relate to each other, our selves, and the various worlds we inhabit.

You will find on these pages publications, project descriptions, exhibition information as well as media appearances around images and knowledge. I’m always interested in collaborations, especially out of the ordinary ones. Feel free to contact me.

My work shows a deep and long commitment to understanding and advancing the study of images from a social science and humanities perspective. My background in cultural anthropology, German Bildwissenschaft (image studies) as well as in information and media studies provides an exceptional background for working in the area. I have studied and/or worked in local languages at universities in Germany (Marburg, Karlsruhe, Berlin), Spain (Madrid), the US (Berkeley), UK (Brighton, London), and Finland (Helsinki, Tampere).

Currently, I serve as Professor of Visual Studies at the Communication Sciences Unit at Tampere University and direct the Visual Studies Lab, an interdisciplinary research centre with externally funded projects awarded by the ERC, EU Chanse, Academy of Finland and various foundations.
